High-Low Hosting: A Cherry Blossom Mahjong Brunch

If you haven’t yet learned to speak Crak and Bam, consider this your sign: Mahjong is officially the hottest game in town. Equal parts strategy, style, and social ritual, the beloved game has found a fresh audience, and there’s still time to join the table.

Because Mahjong demands focus (trust us, multitasking is not part of the game), the food should feel effortless. Enter: the cocktail-style brunch. Think grazeable bites, easy-to-hold pastries, fresh fruit, and celebratory sips that keep guests nourished without ever pulling attention away from the tiles.

Mahjong tables have become as visually captivating as the game itself, with mats and tile collections that are every bit as collectible as fine china. We drew inspiration from the dreamy designs of Oh My Mahjong, whose Chinese Famille Rose inspired mat set became the jumping-off point for the entire design. Blush, magenta, mint, and teal created a color story that felt playful, feminine, and perfectly suited to cherry blossom season.

The magic of high-low hosting is in the mix. We layered vintage Depression-era glass plates with hand-painted Italian china and Greek key paper plates to strike the perfect balance between heirloom worthy and effortlessly approachable. Elevated doesn’t have to mean precious; in fact, the best tables feel collected, not overly coordinated.

At its heart, Mahjong is about more than beautiful tiles and winning hands. We love what the game creates: connection, cognition, and community gathered around a table. A win-win-win or, as we’d call it, a Pung.
