A Walk on the Wild Side: A Midlife Birthday Dinner Party at Swann House

April 9, 2026

Mid-Life + Fabulous at Swann House, Washington D.C.

It’s no secret around here, I celebrate my birthday. But for the last 15+ years, the celebration has taken on a deeper rhythm: an intimate, all-women dinner party with a guest list that always lands at 13 – my lucky number. (And yes, it always works out.)

While the names around the table evolve year over year, the intention never wavers. This is not simply a birthday dinner. It’s a ritual. A deliberate pause. A reason to renew my spirit by surrounding myself with thoughtful, dynamic, and deeply empowered women. Each year begins with a conversational prompt, an invisible thread that effortlessly weaves connection throughout the evening. And every time, it lands.

Set against the timeless elegance of Swann House, the evening began with a warm, personal welcome. Guests were greeted by name at the door and handed a “Pink Lady” cocktail, equal parts nostalgic and celebratory, alongside a custom embroidered monogrammed linen napkin. A small but intentional detail, designed to delight in the moment and double as a keepsake to take home.

Passed hors d’oeuvres from Spilled Milk Catering set the tone: elevated yet approachable. Mini steak frites, pimento cheese on fried saltines, and a bright hamachi crudo made their way through the rooms as conversation began to unfold. For Danielle, this is the heart of it all, introducing women who may not otherwise cross paths and creating the space for something meaningful to spark.

Dinner was held in the solarium, where the glow of the evening settled into a beautifully paced four-course meal. The menu was paired with wines exclusively sourced from female winemakers and growers, a subtle but powerful nod to the spirit of the evening. Place settings featured custom printed menu cards from LePenn Designs, each doubling as a place card, grounding every guest in both presence and belonging.

Every detail reflected the ease and intimacy of gathering in a home that has welcomed guests for generations. Nothing felt overdone, yet everything felt considered.

A defining moment of the evening came with the birthday cake ritual, one I have lovingly made my own. Each guest is given two candles: one to make a wish for the birthday girl, and one to quietly hold a wish for themselves. It’s a simple gesture, but one that shifts the room, rooting the celebration in shared intention, reflection, and joy.

The cake itself, crafted by Sage Cakery, was entirely gluten-free without sacrificing an ounce of indulgence, ensuring every guest could partake in the final course together. You can read more about Sage Cakery who did my birthday cake here.

And then, the florals. Undeniably the showstopper. Designed by Helen Olivia Flowers, the arrangements leaned into a wilder edge – layered textures, rich tonal shifts, and unexpected elements like feathers and sculptural anthurium. They felt alive, slightly undone, and entirely unforgettable.

It was, in every sense, a walk on the wild side. But more than that, it was a reminder: that mid-life can be expansive, intentional, and deeply, unapologetically fabulous.
