Africa: Inspired By

I hope you enjoyed the brief recap of my trip to Africa HERE. I was reminded by some concept designs that I created a few years ago for and haven’t seen reality. Fun fact: I was a finalist for a tabletop competition show that aired over the pandemic (Martha Stewart was a judge!). We had to design over 14 concepts in less than 48 hours (as we all know, creativity doesn’t actually work on a deadline, so this stretched my skill set quite a bit!) I was an alternate and got to quarantine for two weeks in a hotel in New York and ultimately didn’t make it to the show but it was definitely a fun experience. Each design had a theme and here are a few concepts and their design prompts, how did I do? Would you like to see these come to life?

Beetle Bar Cart | MINI Centerpiece or cocktail setting inspired by an insect (Tests color theory and emotion)

I designed a cocktail cart around The Rhinoceros Beetle (aka Hercules (it can lift 850 times their weight) a descendant of the scarab beetle (it “embodies the concept of existence, development, and growth”)  According to Adobe: Black is the absence of light. Unlike white and other hues, pure black can exist in nature without any light at all; black is a hue not a color.

Mandrill | MAIN animals or nature (Tests color theory and emotion)

I chose to create a table inspired by a Mandrill as it is one of the most colorful mammals in the animal kingdom. Their coloring is driven by testosterone and emotion. I chose a cement base for the tablescape as their natural habitat (the African rainforest) is shrinking due to deforestation thus  becoming a cement jungle.
