This historic district offers a perfect fall weekend escape, blending colonial charm with modern creativity and culinary excellence. Having lived in Alexandria, I’ve put together my ideal itinerary for a weekend or day trip in this charming city.
Saturday Morning: Coffee, Market & Brunch
8am | Misha’s Coffeehouse & Roaster
Start your day with a handcrafted coffee at Misha’s, an artisanal coffeehouse established in 1991. They roast all their beans in-house daily, offering a rich and aromatic experience. Located at 917 King Street.
9am | Explore the Old Town Farmers’ Market
Visit the Old Town Farmers’ Market, the longest-running in the U.S., held every Saturday from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Market Square, 301 King Street. Enjoy fresh produce, artisanal goods, and local crafts.
11am | Fontaine Caffé & Creperie
Indulge in a delightful brunch at Fontaine Caffé, known for its French-inspired menu and cozy ambiance. Located at 119 S. Royal Street.


Afternoon: Museums, Galleries & King Street Shopping
12:30pm | Depending on how much time you have, pick two or three museums and shops to explore in the afternoon. These are some of my favorite museums and shops in Old Town, all of which I’ve had the pleasure of visiting myself.
Torpedo Factory Art Center
Explore the nation’s longest continually operated community of publicly accessible artists’ studios in a converted industrial space. Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum
Step back in time at this 18th-century tavern and hotel, offering insights into early American history. Located at 134 N. Royal Street.
The Athenaeum
Visit this Greek Revival building, now a gallery and performance space, showcasing regional art. Open Thursday through Sunday, from noon to 4:00 PM.
Alexandria Black History Museum
Discover the rich African American history of Alexandria through exhibits and the adjacent African American Heritage Park. Located at 902 Wythe Street.
One of the best shops for thoughtful gifting and hysterical cards. Shop local and with purpose.
A stationery shop known for its unique cards and gifts. They don’t make them like this anymore.
A vintage and home furnishings store offering curated collections for a well-designed life.
A store featuring locally made products from Virginia artisans.
While not a local shop specifically, they always have the best window displays!
A cozy independent bookstore with a curated selection of titles.

Evening: Waterfront Dining & Entertainment
4:30 PM – Barca Pier & Wine Bar
Begin your evening with tapas and cocktails at Barca, a waterfront restaurant offering Mediterranean-inspired cuisine in a chic, industrial setting.
Or try out Pre-dinner cocktails at The Parlour – Madame Coco’s Libation Lounge.
6:00 PM – Ghost Tour
Embark on a guided tour through historic Old Town, uncovering tales of its haunted past.
8:30 PM – Vermilion
Conclude your evening with a fine dining experience at Vermilion, known for its seasonal American cuisine.
